Reflection activity: Resisting persuasive technology

How can you fight back?

Reflection activity

🧐 Reflect:

We’ve discussed how persuasive technology is behind all of the social media platforms we use each day. It learns from our behavior and taps into our psychology to build increasingly reliable algorithms that further influence our behavior.
  1. Now that you know more about the role persuasive technology plays in our online lives, what concerns do you have about its impact?
  2. What are some steps you think individuals can take to better combat persuasive technology’s impact on your life?
Individually and collectively, we can look for ways to reduce the role of these types of technologies in our lives. We discuss this further in the "Take control of your social media use" lesson.

The only way I could up the pressure was if you had to put a new valve in it to keep the water flowingpoop in and it wouldn’t leak so much so you wouldn’t need it for that to work in your system but you would be good for the pressure in there if it doesn’t get cold or anything but it might just have some thing in the air in it is not that big and you have the right amount and the pressure to get in it so it doesn’t leak in there so you might be good to have for a long period but I would have it to keep it running in there if it doesn’t get

    1. What concerns me about how persuasive technology plays out in our lives is that it made me realize that we are easily able to be led to one place in this case social media by it hijacking our instincts sorta.
    2. Some steps I can take to better combat persuasive technology's impact on my life is that we can turn off the notifications for social media applications so that we can remove one of the ways it can hijack our minds.

    1. A concern I have about the role persuasive technology plays in our online lives is that the algorithm and technology will become more advanced and intelligent in the near future. A more advanced algorithm would persuade even more people to be on their website/app and let them down a rabbit hole that they might be addicted to.
    2. I think some steps individuals can take to better combat persuasive technology’s impact on life is to log off for a while and go out discover a hobby or an interest that doesn't make you stay on social media for hours on end.

    1. The concerns that could impact our lives is if we keep on checking the notifications that we keep receiving, or the likes we get just by posting something.
    2. Some steps is if people stop posting about them selfs daily, don't get to interested in a notification or likes, and not cousinly being on social media 24/7.

    1. People focusing on virtual popularity and not caring about what is real.
    2. Set a timer for how long you can use the internet and when that time is up put your devices away.

I'm concerned that persuasive technology can manipulate us without us ever realizing it, but I think simply logging off every now and then would help.
